On October 22, 1943, the Rev. Robert Marsden, general secretary of the Committee on Home Missions and Church Extension, sent a two-page letter to 24,000 elders and laymen in the Presbyterian Church in the USA about the doctrinal situation in that church. Over 300 replies were received, many of them highly critical, but about 75 of them were at least mildly favorable. These were followed up with further correspondence by Mr. Marsden, and, in some cases, with a personal visit. Mr. Marsden reported that some valuable contacts were made and evidence existed that at least a few individuals have been won for the cause of the OPC through this effort.
